The traditional role of family in care of elders is diminishing in Korea. Instead, a local community-based approach is proposed as an alternative. The community-based service utilizes neighbors as both service providers and users. However, not many communities exist in Korea where elders could get support from younger generations. In addition, providing effective care is difficult because it is not well-understood how much elders socialize and support each other. Therefore, this study examined neighborhood social activities and networks for potential roles in the community care in Korean cities. Researchers conducted conversational interviews and found neighborhood social networks where elders support and compensate each other for their shortcomings such as poor eyesight and walking difficulties. Utilization of neighborhood elderly network is proposed for community care.
